Sweet & Sour Red Cabbage

From Mom - A good old German recipe. She always made it when Dick was visiting.

Ingredients

  • 1/4 lb. bacon, diced
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1 medium head red cabbage, shredded
  • 2 Tbsp. sugar
  • 1 clove garlic, finely chopped
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 tsp. pepper
  • 2 large bay leaves
  • 1 tsp. dried basil
  • 1/2 cup vinegar

Directions

  1. Fry bacon until brown. Add chopped onion and cabbage.
  2. Cook slowly, covered.
  3. Add seasonings. Add vinegar last.
  4. Cook until cabbage is tender. Start on high and turn the heat down. (30-45 minutes)
  5. Season to taste. Add water if needed.
