Sweet & Sour Red Cabbage
From Mom - A good old German recipe. She always made it when Dick was visiting.
Ingredients
- 1/4 lb. bacon, diced
- 1 medium onion, chopped
- 1 medium head red cabbage, shredded
- 2 Tbsp. sugar
- 1 clove garlic, finely chopped
- 1 tsp. salt
- 1/2 tsp. pepper
- 2 large bay leaves
- 1 tsp. dried basil
- 1/2 cup vinegar
Directions
- Fry bacon until brown. Add chopped onion and cabbage.
- Cook slowly, covered.
- Add seasonings. Add vinegar last.
- Cook until cabbage is tender. Start on high and turn the heat down. (30-45 minutes)
- Season to taste. Add water if needed.
